Hirsch Perlman makes art that asks questions, or asks us to ask questions, that circle around belief. What is testimony or documentation or proof? Why do so many things—piles of garbage, wooden blocks—look human if you stare at them long enough? What makes us think we can separate our minds from our bodies? Currently chair of the art department at UCLA, Perlman comes home to Chicago for Fallfest/17 to draw from his latest work and talk about art and embodiment, about what we cannot help but believe.

The annual Richard Gray Visual Art Series recognizes a significant gift from founding CHF board member and distinguished art dealer Richard Gray.

Presenters:

Hirsch Perlman’s work has been exhibited throughout the United States and Europe including one-person exhibitions at the Renaissance Society, Chicago; a Projects exhibition at the Museum of Modern Art, New York; Kunstraum, Vienna; in the 1989 and 2002 Whitney Biennials as well the 1993 Venice Biennale and is represented in the collections of the Whitney Museum of American Art, The Museum of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles, and The Museum of Contemporary Art, Chicago, among others.
