When Netflix debuted Making a Murderer in 2015, audiences were both riveted and frustrated by this story of wrongful conviction partly based on eyewitness testimony from Penny Beerntsen, the victim of a brutal attack. In her forthcoming documentary, True Memories and Other Falsehoods, Northwestern University filmmaker Debra Tolchinsky hones in on Beerntsen’s account as part of a larger exploration of how memories are formed, implanted, and/or contaminated, especially in the context of the criminal justice system. Founder and artistic director of Facets Multimedia Milos Stehlik joins Tolchinskly in conversation.

This program is presented in partnership with the Alice Kaplan Institute for the Humanities.
